The magical Lake Lahontan was home to a small group of half-human/half-fish creatures, also known as Merburners – named so because of their odd close resemblance to today’s burners.

The Merburners lived in a peaceful community for thousands of years, until Lake Lahontan finally dried up. Some burners may attest to the magical qualities that the playa, thousands of years later, still posses.

It seems only fitting that Disorient pay homage to the Merburners of Ancient Playa at Boom Boat – Compressor on the Water, Disorient’s send-off to those traveling to the playa; aboard a paddlewheel boat in the middle of the Hudson River.

Fluores: Synonym of Fluorite
From the Latin, fluere = “to flow” (fleur = flower in French). The term fluorescence is derived from fluorite, which will often markedly exhibit this effect.

Over a month later and now writing this. Yeah, a bit late. But, hey, I’ve been busy.

My trip to London last month was wonderful! I just wish it could have been longer. I went with my friend, Hot Sauce, who did stay longer. And she’s now moving to London to live! I think she also had a wonderful experience.

The London Decompression was amazing. I loved every minute of it. I didn’t take any photos of the event because I wanted to take it all in, instead of looking at everything from behind a camera lense. The costumes, the people…all beautiful and lovely. There was so much love throughout the night. Great music. Lots of smiles. Lots of dancing. A couple of favorite moments were being offered milk by the cute creepy clown girl and being asked to lick chocolate offer a woman’s hand. She thanked me for trusting that it was chocolate…

I performed silk aerial acrobatics later in the night and Hot Sauce competed in the Miss London Decompression Pagaent. We attended the event with Disorient camp mates, JK and Seven, and met such lovely characters.

Four months ago I decided to register 1,000 new voters for the General Elections. That was pretty tough. It’s been a while since my organizing days, and I guess I was a bit rusty. Anyway, I decided to get creative and have fun with it. I carried voter registration forms with me wherever I went – bars, parties, dinners, vacation – wherever. Registering people to vote at bars was fun, but not very practical. After a few soggy and illegible forms I gave the bar scene a break. I registered some folks at parties. That was okay, but people were more interested in dancing than stopping at a table. I registered a few people on vacation at Burning Man, but it’s hard to hold the attention of folks at Burning Man for long. I saw that I couldn’t do it alone. So I enlisted the help of friends. Friends started picking up forms in bulk. I then pretty much gave the project over to the brothers of Phi Sigma Chi Fraternity, who in turn teamed up with their campus NYPIRG chapter and registered well over 1,000 people. Ah, the power of delegation.

I met some of the most delightful people I’ve ever encountered within the 8 hour that I danced and laughed with these English burners years ago. There was Karen, the pretty brown skin woman who’s voice sounded oh so lovely whenever she told me her name, again and again; as I was very bad with names then (and still am). I thought it cute as she introduced me to her friends throughout the night explaining to them that I was on holiday. On holiday… There was the DJ who in the middle of playing a wicked set reached over to hand me a bottle of water. The sweat dripped off my body as the floor bounced beneath us. I remember an older woman, maybe in her late 40s/early 50s. I was on the roof chatting with a few folks when this woman sat with her back to me. As she sat I noticed on the back of her shirt were written the words “FUCK BUSH” in pink faux fur. I tapped her on her shoulder to tell her how much I liked her shirt, pointing out that I was from the U.S. Well, that was the party killer right there. As she curled her lip turning back around, faux fur lady exclaimed, “Oh… I guess someone has to be.”  Well! I never! I guess it wasn’t all PLUR here. I turned away from faux fur lady and continued to dance with new friends and wander the scene. As I exited the building at 8am I was greeted by the sun and a smiling face at the door that told me to, “Come on back later. We’re going to be here for 36 hours.” Oh man! Finally! I found them. These were the people I’ve been searching for. My clan, my tribe, my people. But they were in England…

Upon returning to the States I told my friend Tara all about the magical party I went to on the other side of the pond. “Oh, there are parties like that all the time in Dumbo,” she explained. And so, the journey into the rabbit hole started.

One party led to another, which eventually led to playing in the desert one week a year. Within the months following Burning Man various local Burning Man communities all over the world get together to hold what is called Decompression.

I’m very excited to return to London for the London burners’ Decompression event. I plan on printing and wearing a t-shirt that will read “I [heart] the President of the United States of America” and maybe spelling out my Burning Man camp’s name, “Disorient,” in pink faux fur on the back of one of my shirts

Oh, what fun we shall have! What fun, indeed.
